Broken River

The Broken River rises east of Barwite; flows past Nillahcootie and Barjarg; tributary of the Goulburn River at Shepparton. Originally so called because in dry seasons the river bed was broken into a series of waterholes. An Aboriginal name exists (Ngurai-illam-wurring) for the junction with the Goulburn River. At first, the Broken River was called Winding Swamp by Europeans.[1]
